At TPC in Emmeloord, the potato capital of the world, we strive to balance financial economic results, social concerns and the environment. We do this both while growing our unique seed potatoes and in our overall business operations. We therefore develop, for instance, potato varieties that have a high resistance to potato fatigue (AM), drought, salinisation of groundwater and diseases. The more resistant a variety is, the more resistant the crops are to the (climatic) challenges of our time and the less intervention with crop care products is needed.
In the existence of The Potato Company, we have set up a number of joint venture projects in developing countries, for example in Sourou Valley in Burkina Faso and in Angola. We have supported local people in growing seed potatoes so that they can make a living. Especially the multi-resistant AM varieties, such as Monte Carlo and Toronto won high honours in West Africa.
Furthermore, at TPC we also try to do our bit at the local level. For example, we supply potatoes to food banks throughout the Netherlands. To reduce our footprint, our building in Emmeloord has 3000 Wp of solar panels. Moreover, we are aware of our energy consumption. We do not print if not needed, have lights on motion detectors, use energy-efficient computers and buy green electricity for the energy we need in addition to our solar panels. Moreover, almost our entire vehicle fleet is electric. At The Potato Company, we are in touch with nature every day. We are therefore very aware that we need to treat it with care.
